The Fine for “Spoofing”

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has fined Adrian Abramovich $120 million for “spoofing” and making over 96 million robocalls between 2015 and 2016. Abramovich, who was previously known to the FCC, attempted to sell timeshares and vacation packages supposedly coming from well-known companies such as Marriot, TripAdvisor, and Expedia. However, when consumers “pressed 1”, their call was “routed” to foreign call centers pushing vacation deals unrelated to those companies.

Further, Abramovich committed neighbor “spoofing”—or modifying caller ID information to display a local caller ID to consumers. The FCC declared that Abramovich’s scam, along with the spoofing, is in violation of the Truth in Caller ID Act (TICIDA) as it intended to deceive customers.
