The FCC Announces the Largest Recorded Fine for Unwanted Prerecorded Calls

Yesterday, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) reported their largest fine yet for violating the TCPA’s prerecorded advertising call (a form of ‘robocalling’) regulations. Travel Club Marketing was accused of making 142 telemarketing calls to individuals’ cellphones and landlines, most of whom were on the National Do Not Call Registry. As a result, Travel Club will have to pay $2.96 million for their unsolicited calls.

This class action suit came just after the FCC released a Declaratory Ruling to the TCPA, which included new steps for consumers to opt out from receiving unwanted robocalls. Automated calls and texts are the number one complaint that the FCC receives from consumers with more than 215,000 reported last year alone.

This should serve as another reminder to businesses that the FCC is continuing to crackdown on telemarketing calls to ensure the protection of the consumer.
