A Rundown of the FTC Report for 2014-2015 FY

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is required under the Do Not Call (DNC) Registry Fee Extension Act of 2007 to prepare a biennial report on the National DNC Registry. The FTC recently released its report for the 2014 and 2015 fiscal years. The DNC Registry report summarizes the current operations, new telecommunication technologies, and the established business relationship exemption to the FTC’s enforcement efforts.

Important updates this year include:

  • As of September 30, 2015, there are over 222 million telephone numbers registered on the National DNC Registry.
  • 5 million numbers were added to the Registry in 2015 alone.
  • Over 23,000 telemarketers and exempted organizations subscribed to National DNC Registry, and 2,504 of those entities paid access fees, totaling over $13.3 million dollars.
  • Reiteration of the protection consumers since telephone numbers will no longer expire after the initial 5-year registration.
  • FTC addressed its tracking of new technologies impacting the enforcement of the Registry, consumers, and telemarketers. Those specifically pointed out include Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology, technologies that allow telemarketers to fake caller ID, and automated dialing systems.
  • The FTC claims that the new technologies have caused a significant increase in consumer complaints.
  • In 2015, the FTC received about 175,000 robo-call complaints monthly.
