Uber to Pay Millions to Settle TCPA Lawsuit

A popular ride-sharing service agrees to pay tens of millions after violating the Telephone Customer Protection Act (TCPA).

Uber Technologies will pay $20 million to settle a class-action lawsuit after the company sent automated text messages to consumers without their consent. These messages were sent between December 31, 2010, and August 17, 2017.

The lawsuit, filed in early August 2015, alleged Uber sent text messages without the consumer’s consent, which plaintiffs say was an invasion of their privacy and caused aggravation.

Maria Vegara, who filed the suit, said she got at least eight messages asking her to complete the sign-up process for Uber, regardless of the fact she had never signed up for an account.

Vegara also claimed Uber is in possession of inaccurate phone numbers which can cost the consumers receiving messages because many cell phone companies charge for spam texts.

Consumers, who received the text messages in question, also said when they requested for Uber to stop sending them, Uber ignored the ask.
